Landslides Leave Big Sur’s Beloved Landmarks Fighting for Survival. Photographs by Max Knight

 

LA-based photographer Max Knight pitched this project to me in August 2024. I was immediately drawn to his poetic images of the pacific coast and knew that by focusing on the economic impact of Big Sur that this would be an excellent story for WSJ’s readers.

My favorite frame from the edit is the scene at Nepenthe of a sparse crowd of patrons all turned towards the epic view. It’s as if they’re all watching a movie. The empty tables in the foreground tell the story of a small-business in crisis, while the background captures the natural beauty of Big Sur, perfectly balancing the complex issues at the heart of this piece.
